Toxic Bait and Baiting Strategies for Feral Cats
نویسندگان
چکیده
To improve feral cat control we developed a dry pelleted toxic bait and evaluated the potential of lures. A polymer fish meal bait was preferred by cats from a range of bait types tested. L-alanine further increased bait acceptance by cats in pen trials and catnip may have the potential to increase field acceptance and target specificity. An oral LD90 of 0.38 mg/ kg was established for sodium monofluoroacetate (1080) in feral cats voluntarily eating surface-loaded baits. Acute toxicity to cats of warfarin, cholecalciferol, and gliftor was tested. However, because the cat proved highly sensitive to 1080, we recommend its use at a dose of 2 mg per cat bait. In preliminary field trials of bait acceptance using non-toxic polymer bait (without flavours or attractants), marked with the plasma marker iophenoxic acid 50% of 39 cats caught within 3 weeks of laying the baits were marked. Subsequently polymer bait, surface coated with 1080 was used in the successful eradication of feral cats from Matakohe Island (37 ha) Whangarei Harbour, New Zealand. Proc. 15th Vertebrate Pest Conf. Feral cat control research: Western Shield review— February 2003
The feral cat (Felis catus) is recognised as a significant threat to fauna conservation in Western Australia, particularly in arid and semi arid regions of the State. Not only do feral cats prey on native fauna and have the potential to spread diseases, but they have proven to be an obstacle to fauna reintroduction programs. Western Shield fox baiting strategies have been ineffective against fe...

OBJECTIVES To develop an encapsulation method for delivery of vaccines to feral pigs, and quantify the effect of iophenoxic acid on captive feral pig blood iodine concentrations to assist in investigation of factors affecting vaccine uptake. DESIGN AND METHODS Feral pigs were administered iophenoxic acid by oral gavage, and consumption was assessed for different encapsulation methods in baits...
متن کاملEfficacy of the Boar-Operated-System to deliver baits to feral swine.
Feral swine (Sus scrofa) pose a significant disease threat to livestock and humans. Emerging technologies to reduce feral swine disease transmission risks include fertility control, vaccination, and toxicants. However, for these technologies to be appropriate for field application, a feral swine-specific oral delivery system is needed. We used two field trials to generate information related to...
متن کاملAssessing Risks to Non-Target Species during Poison Baiting Programs for Feral Cats
Poison baiting is used frequently to reduce the impacts of pest species of mammals on agricultural and biodiversity interests. However, baiting may not be appropriate if non-target species are at risk of poisoning. Here we use a desktop decision tree approach to assess the risks to non-target vertebrate species in Australia that arise from using poison baits developed to control feral house cat...

Introduction: Application of insecticidal baits is one of the most common and effective strategies for controlling German cockroach, (Blattella germanica L.) The current study was designed to investigate the susceptibility level of German cockroach to fipronil and imidacloprid gel baits in laboratory situation and to recommend its usage in Iran. Methods: This experimental study was conducted o...
